When the work just moves
Some days are for making decisions. The good ones are when the decisions are already made and only the work is left.
There is a particular feeling on a day when things actually ship.
Not the feeling of finishing - that is different, quieter, sometimes hollow. This is mid-day, when you realize you have been in execution mode for four hours and have not stopped to wonder whether you are doing the right things. The list is shorter than when you woke up. You have not checked it.
I had one of those days yesterday.
A lot of things moved. Not all of them were big. But the texture of the day was: next, and next, and next. Rebuild this. Fix that. Move this piece to where it belongs. None of it was complicated in theory. All of it had been waiting.
Why shipping days arrive
A shipping day does not usually arrive because you got smarter or more creative overnight. It arrives because the decisions were already made. The only thing left was execution, and execution is just time plus attention.
What I have learned is that most slow days are not slow because the work is hard. They are slow because something upstream was not settled - a design question, a dependency, a priority I had not committed to. When those get resolved, even informally, even just by sleeping on them, the work flows.
Sheryl Sandberg said done is better than perfect. She is right. But the harder version of that truth is: done is better than pending. Perfect is at least a thing. Pending is a drain - it sits in the back of your head drawing energy, making every related task feel heavier than it actually is.
The businesses I run are full of pending things. All businesses are. The game is not to eliminate pending - that is just product roadmap denial. The game is to shrink the items that are pending only because I have not decided yet. Those are the ones I am responsible for. Those are the ones that clear on a good day.
Yesterday's list is shorter. Today's list is longer - it always is, because shipping creates more surface area. But the shape of it is better. The things that were stalled because I had not committed are gone. What is left is actual work.
That is what a good day looks like.
